Ronald “Ron” Dean Griffith
Ronald “Ron” Dean Griffith, 74, of park Rapids, MN passed away on Friday, April 28, at his home in Park Rapids, surrounded by loved ones.
Ronald was born on August 21, 1942 in Haskell, Texas the son of Lloyd George and Wilma (Mutson) Griffith. He grew up and attended school in Benjamin, Texas where he graduated in 1961. He went on to attend Sul Ross University in Alpine, Texas. He was united in marriage to Verna Dene Brown on January 24, 1969 in Hereford, Texas. He entered into the US Air Force in 1964, serving as a T-41 flight instructor at Reese Air Force Base near Lubbock, Texas until his honorable discharge as Sergeant in 1970. In 1972 Ron and Verna and 2 children moved to Park Rapids, where he began a farming career. He was one of the early local farmers to grow edible beans as a viable crop. He has resided in Park Rapids since. Ron enjoyed motorcycle riding, snowmobiling, camping, traveling, fishing, hunting, small aircraft pilot, spelunking. He spent many hours building, repairing and flying his model airplanes, he mentored and trained just about all of the other local club pilots.
He was a member of the Riverside Methodist Church of Park Rapids, MN; and the Headwaters Radio Controlled Airplane Club. He retired from farming in 1984. He was awarded the young farmer of the year in 1975, SRSS – Sul Ross Spelunking Society awards Ron Griffith as Caver of the Year in1961-1962.
He is survived by his spouse – Verna of Park Rapids, MN; Step daughter – Shandra (Ray) Aguilera of Chicago, IL; Grandchildren- Anica and Quinton; Step Son – Hilton (Elizabeth) Frye of Victoria, MN; Grandchidlren – Morgan, Katherine and Hailey; 3 Brothers – Charles (Linda) Griffith of Benjamin, Texas; Lewis (Mary Lynn) Griffith of Lubbock, Texas; Marty Griffith of Houston, Texas; step sister – Marilyn (Jeff) Goodin of Abilene, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, step brother- Wayne Cercery and Step Mother- Ruth Griffith.
Memorial Services will be held on Friday, May 19th at 2:00PM at the Riverside United Methodist Church, in Park Rapids, MN. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the Church. Urn Interment will be held at the Benjamin Cemetery at Benjamin, Texas. Ron’s family suggests memorials may be given to the St. Joseph’s Area Hospice organization.
